In last weeks blog I talked about being clear about your purpose as one of the top tips for building leadership confidence and self belief.
So, why is purpose so important for leadership confidence?
Purpose provides focus and drive, it provides motivation and it provides inspiration. Those are 4 of the most important contributions a leader can make. We want leaders who inspire us around a purpose we can connect to, motivate us to want to achieve that purpose and has the focus to know what to prioritise and keep us to the path and the drive to push through challenges, bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward.
If a leader loses their sense of purpose its practically impossible to do any of those things as they will no longer feel inspired, will lose personal motivation and drive and waver in their ability to focus and prioritise. All of that will also sap a leaders confidence and ability to use their judgement to make good decisions.
Its easy sometimes to lose a sense of purpose. Overwhelm and competing demands can blur the lines, lack of commitment in others to can drag you down, challenges come thick and fast and can appear too big, feelings of failure and isolation can grow and gradually that sense of purpose becomes eroded.
Regrouping, taking a step back, creating breathing and thinking time and giving yourself space to reconnect with your purpose is essential to creating and regaining a sense of confidence and inspiration which will bring back your focus, motivation and drive.
One of my mantras is that we cannot take others any further than we are prepared to take ourselves, so if you want to be the best you can be and inspire your followers likewise, ask yourself TODAY “What is my purpose as a leader?” “What do I need to do in order to keep that sense of purpose strong within me?” “What help do I need?” Those 3 questions could be the most important thing you do to strengthen your leadership confidence.
