Creating Confident Leaders - Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

This week we are off to see the marvellous Carrie Underwood at Manchester Arena, she is one of Richards’ and my favourite singers of all time, so we are super excited.

Thinking about seeing Carrie also got me thinking about getting out of your comfort zone and how important that is for confidence and for leadership.  For those of you who don’t know Carrie’s story, she is the girl from a small town in Oklahoma who won American Idol’s fourth season and has gone on to win countless awards and join the top echelons of country music stars. One of her mantras is “Throw caution to the winds and just do it” and she has certainly exemplified this.

Many of my most successful leadership clients also exemplify this in many ways and its so vital for leaders.   Leaders who are ruled by caution cannot lead!  You may be thinking whooaa hang on a minute, there are definitely times a leader needs to be cautious!   I agree there is a time for caution and I am not advocating reckless risk taking.   However, I still stand by my earlier statement because to demonstrate leadership you have to be prepared to step out of your comfort zone and move forward without necessarily knowing how it will all pan out.    Leaders must be able to take calculated risks and be prepared to try new things, step into the unknown and believe in themselves and their teams to face up to new challenges and deal with them.

I spoke about a sense of purpose a couple of weeks ago and part of leading with purpose is to be prepared to take risks and try new stuff in service of that greater purpose.  When we do step out of our comfort zone it also builds confidence because we realise we CAN handle it and its usually not as scary as we thought it would be.  (Or if it is, we can handle being scared and STILL come through…………).  So confident leaders will always be prepared to throw caution to the winds when they need to, will always take some risks, find a new path and seek out challenge.  They will also help and encourage others to do those things as well and by doing so start to create the leaders of the future.

If you are thinking about doing something challenging and a bit scary in service of your leadership and purpose, remember Carrie Underwoods’ story and be prepared to “Throw caution to the winds and just do it”………………
