It’s a difficult time right now, all the uncertainty around, the division and the emotional and mental stress that seems to be in the very air. Its at times like these that it can be very tempting just to hunker down and stick with what you know. Play it safe, be cautious, slow down, circle the wagons and try to protect yourself. I’m sure you know that feeling, I certainly do and I am seeing it with the leaders I work with as well.
However, and paradoxically, these are exactly the kind of times that we need to stay creative and have the courage to try new things, because playing safe will not help us. Its at times like this we have the most need of creative and resourceful leadership, leaders who can navigate around the uncertainty, stay strategic and brave and develop new thinking which can help us to adapt to the turbulence we have around us.
In order to do this we have to push past feelings which are born of FEAR and remember the words of President Franklin D Roosevelt “The Only Thing We Have To Fear Is Fear Itself.”
So, no matter how tempting it is to “stay safe and stick with what you know”, I want to encourage you to use your leadership creativity now to both generate new ideas yourself and involve and encourage your people to do the same. Then try them out!
Try a creativity session at your next away day or team meeting and make it opportunity focused. One exercise you could try is to ask one or all of these questions:-
What are the opportunities being created for us right now?
What may we need to change to maximise our opportunities?
What’s are our greatest strengths and how will these help us to meet changing conditions?
What do we need to learn in order to change and maximise our opportunities?
What new idea can we implement right now in order to move us forward?
Note, these are all opportunity focused and positively worded. The last one is particularly important. We push through fear by action and reframing.
